247 prayer has caught hold at one of the oldest churches in Hemel and will run from tomorrow until Sun, 04 February 2007. St Mary's Church in the Old Town was built in 1140 and is one of the finest Norman churches in the county with a 200 foot spire. But it is what will be going on inside that is set to help point people towards heaven, under the wise leadership of the Rector, the Revd Peter Cotton, Dean of Hemel Hempstead.

Schedule for St Mary's

After the handover from Carey Baptist Church at St Paul’s Patronal Festival on the evening of Sunday 28th January, St Mary’s will be open for prayer three times a day Monday – Saturday. The place of prayer will normally be the Chapel of the Holy Spirit.

There will be a daily Eucharist, except Saturday, and simple offices in the morning, at midday and in the evening, except Friday, the Feast of the presentation of Christ in the Temple, when there will also be a 6.00pm Eucharist.

Prayers in the morning will be followed by a simple breakfast in church at about 8.30a.m. Midday Prayer will be followed by refreshments and a picnic lunch for those who bring their own.

In addition, members of the congregations of St Mary’s and St Paul’s are invited to pray at home, covering as much as possible of the week, day and night.

By taking part in whatever way you can, you will be joining in the concern of Christians across the town for the flourishing of our community. You will also be contributing to building up the spiritual life of our parish. And in the process you may find you own spiritual life being deepened, too.

During the hours the church is open for prayer, feel free to come and go as you please, taking care not to disturb the prayer of others.

Here are the details of 24/7 opening times from next week being held at Carey Baptist opposite the Civic Centre. Meetings will take place in the Church Lounge. All welcome.

247 at St John's Boxmoor

St John's Church, Heath Lane, Boxmoor have started their 24/7 prayer initiative. Many parishioners have signed up to pray throughout the week. In addition, St John's will be holding three prayer meetings per day, at 9am, 12pm and 5pm to which all are welcome. Do feel free to join them if you can.

As a reminder that they are in a week of 24/7 prayer, they are asking all of their congregants to pause at 8am each morning and say the Lord's Prayer. Why not join with them during this week and say the Lord's Prayer with them as well?
